Inauguration ceremony – 2023/2024 (FAS)

The Faculty of Applied Science ceremonially inaugurated the 11th intake (2023/2024 batch) of the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and the Bachelor of Science in Applied Physics and Electronics on 15th September 2025 at the Mini Auditorium, Trincomalee Campus, Eastern University, Sri Lanka.

The programme commenced with the lighting of the traditional oil lamp. A welcome address was presented by the Student Representative, followed by the inaugural address delivered by Mr. Subramaniam Thadchanamoorthy, Dean of the Faculty, and a special address by Prof. K.T. Sundaresan, Rector of the Campus. The Heads of Departments of Computer Science and Physical Science also addressed the gathering. The event concluded with a Vote of Thanks delivered by Mrs. V. Niththiya, Assistant Registrar, Faculty of Applied Science.

Workshop on “Soldering and PCB Design” for DPS Undergraduates

The Applied Science Network Society (ApSNET) of the Department of Physical Science, Faculty of Applied Science, Trincomalee Campus, Eastern University, Sri Lanka, organized a Workshop on “Soldering and PCB Design” on 18th July 2025 for undergraduate students of the 2020/2021 and 2021/2022 academic batches of the .

The workshop aimed to enhance students’ practical skills in soldering electronic circuits and designing Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) using EasyEDA software. The sessions covered core techniques in soldering and desoldering, as well as the assembly and testing of op-amp inverting amplifier circuits. Participants also engaged in designing PCBs for CD4026-based counter circuits, reinforcing their understanding of digital and analog circuit applications.

The sessions were facilitated by the department’s laboratory demonstrators under the guidance of academic staff. This workshop served as a valuable platform for students to gain hands-on experience relevant to their academic and professional development in applied electronics.

Physics Outreach Program at Al-Hira Girls Muslim Maha Vidyalayam, Kinniya

The Department of Physical Science, in collaboration with the Unit of Industry and Community Linkages, successfully organized a Physics Outreach Program at Al-Hira Girls Muslim Maha Vidyalayam, Kinniya on 17.07.2025.

This initiative featured a series of engaging Physics practical sessions specially designed for Advanced Level Physics students, aiming to enrich their understanding of core scientific concepts through hands-on activities and demonstrations.

A dedicated team of academic staff and undergraduate students from the department participated as resource persons, facilitating experiments, guiding students, and encouraging interactive learning. Their contributions played a vital role in making the sessions educational, inspiring, and enjoyable for all participants.

The outreach program not only helped students enhance their practical skills but also fostered a greater interest in the subject, bridging the gap between classroom theory and experimental application.

Electronics Practical Sessions for A/L Physics Teachers

The Department of Physical Science, in collaboration with the Unit of Industry and Community Linkages, successfully conducted a hands-on Electronics Practical Session for Advanced Level Physics teachers on 30th April 2025 at the Electronics Laboratory, Trincomalee Campus.

Physics teachers from various schools across the Trincomalee District participated in this capacity-building program, aimed at enhancing their practical knowledge and teaching effectiveness in the field of electronics.

The sessions were facilitated by the department’s academic staff and demonstrators, who served as resource persons, guiding participants through key experiments, circuit assembly, and measurement techniques aligned with the A/L Physics syllabus.

This initiative is part of the department’s ongoing outreach efforts to strengthen the connection between university resources and school-level education. The Department of Physical Science extends its sincere appreciation to all participating teachers and the Unit of Industry and Community Linkages for their continued support

Progress of CICL of Trincomalee campus

The Centre for Industry and Community Linkages with Faculty of Applied Science, Trincomalee Campus, EUSL, contributed as an exhibitor at AERO BASH – 2024. As an exhibitor, the unit presented various academic and applied science projects, highlighted ongoing research, and engaged in knowledge-sharing with industry professionals.

The event served as a platform for showcasing innovative projects and advancements from the university, aimed at fostering collaboration between industry and academia. This contribution successfully strengthened ties with the community and industry partners, reinforcing the faculty’s commitment to academic excellence and societal impact.

This event took place on 22nd August 2024 to 26th August 2024 from 03.00 P.M to 08.00 P.M.

2020/2021 batch students from the Department of Physical Science have participated with the coordination of Mr. S.Uthayaraj/ Lecturer/ Department of Physical Science.

Exhibition on Green Energy Technologies and a seminar on Physics and Electronics practicals for Advanced Level students

An exhibition on Green energy technology and Seminar for Physics and Electronics practicals for Advanced Level students were organized by the Department of Physical Science, Trincomalee Campus, Eastern University, Sri Lanka,with the collaboration of the Western Norway University of Applied Sciences. These events were held on 21st and 22nd March 2024 under the leadership of Mr. Selladurai Loheeswaran, Dean of the Faculty of Applied Science. The Rector of Trincomalee Campus, EUSL, Prof. Mrs. C.G. Devadasan ceremonially inaugurated the event. The exhibition showcased various projects by university students, demonstrating the generation of electricity and energy from renewable sources. It was organized to share knowledge about renewable energy with advanced-level science stream school students. Over 500 students from different schools in the Trincomalee district attended, gaining valuable insights into renewable energy.

Additionally, a laboratory seminar session was conducted by lecturers and students from the Department of Physical Science. The session focused on providing practical knowledge related to the Advanced Level science stream school curriculum for students who participated in the exhibition at the department’s laboratory.

Robotic Competition on Line Following Robots

The Department of Physical Science and Faculty Career Guidance Cell of the Faculty of Applied Science at Trincomalee Campus, Eastern University, Sri Lanka, proudly initiated a Robotic Competition dedicated to Line Following Robots. The competition was held on November 29, 2023, at the Electronics Laboratory of the Department of Physical Science

The competition was conducted after three-days workshop held from November 6-8, 2023 that promoted the basic knowledge, design and development of line following robots, and contributed to sparking interest among the second-year undergraduates of the Department of Physical Science.

The competition aimed to cultivate the creativity and imagination of the participants. The event featured a diverse range of robotic challenges, from autonomous navigation tasks to intricate obstacle courses to test the participant’s strategic thinking and technical prowess.

During the competition, the arena was filled with staff and undergraduates of the Trincomalee Campus from various disciplines to witnessed the brilliance of automation and the spirit of innovation among the participants. The teams from second-year undergraduates (participants) showcased their robotic creations, each varying for supremacy in categories such as agility, precision, and overall performance.

The judges evaluated the robots based on various criteria including speed, accuracy, ability to overcome obstacles or challenges within the course, innovation, and adaptability.

The “Robotic Competition” not only celebrated technological achievements but also provide a platform for enthusiasts to exchange ideas, share knowledge and fostered a sense of community among robotics enthusiasts.

The winners were awarded for their outstanding contributions, inspiring the audience and to continue pushing the boundaries of what robots can achieve.

Workshop on Scientific Method and Design of Research

The workshop on “Scientific Method and Design of Research” was conducted on November 22, 2023, at the Electronics Laboratory of the Department of Physical Science, Faculty of Applied Science, Trincomalee Campus, Eastern University, Sri Lanka. This workshop aimed to provide a solid foundation in scientific methods and the designs of research. It was jointly organized by the Department of Physical Science and the Faculty Career Guidance Cell (FCGC) of the Faculty of Applied Science. Dr. K. Arjunan, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Bio-Science, Faculty of Applied Science, University of Vavuniya, Sri Lanka, served as a resource person for this workshop. The workshop was attended by academics, second-year, and third-year undergraduates of the Department of Physical Science. The workshop empowered the participants to understand the importance of research, essential principles, scientific methods, strategies for selecting appropriate research designs, and guidelines for writing research articles.

Workshop on Microcontrollers

The workshop on “Microcontrollers” was conducted from November 6-8, 2023, at the Electronics Laboratory of the Department of Physical Science, Faculty of Applied Science, Trincomalee Campus, Eastern University, Sri Lanka. The workshop was organized by the Faculty Career Guidance Cell (FCGC) of the Faculty of Applied Science. Two lecturers, namely, Eng. S. Jeyaram and Eng. M. P. M. Suhail, from the Department of Physical Science, Faculty of Applied Science, Trincomalee Campus, Eastern University, Sri Lanka, served as resource persons for this program. This workshop was aimed to provide a platform to understand the use of microcontrollers and their importance in current technological applications. The program was conducted for second-year undergraduates of the Department of Physical Science.

Day 1: Introduction to microcontroller structure and programming
Day 2: Hands-on training in microcontroller systems to solve specific problems
Day 3: Designing and developing a microcontroller-based line-following robot with obstacle avoidance and rerouting using IoT
Furthermore, the FCGC invited the participants who attended this workshop to a microcontroller-based robotics competition, which will be held on November 29, 2023.

Awareness Program on Industrial Metrology

The awareness program on Industrial Metrology was conducted on November 17, 2023, at the Electronics Laboratory of the Department of Physical Science (DPS), Faculty of Applied Science, Trincomalee Campus, Eastern University, Sri Lanka. This workshop was aimed to provide an awareness on importance of metrology. The DPS is planning to introduce a course module on Metrology. Therefore, this program was co-organized by the Department of Physical Science (DPS) and the Faculty Curriculum Development Committee (FCDC) of the Faculty of Applied Science. Dr. N. P. Liyanawaduge, Senior Lecturer, Department of Engineering Technology, Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka, served as a resource person for this awareness program. The workshop was attended by the staff, first-year, and second-year undergraduates of the Department of Physical Science. The workshop was conducted in three sub-sessions. The first session focused on the introduction to metrology, while the second session focused on investigation and analysis. The final session focused on the impact of metrology on laboratory and industrial applications.
